Gibraltar - introduction

Mediterranean StepsThe Rock of Gibraltar

The Rock of Gibraltar (less often referred to as the Pillar of Hercules) is a monolithic limestone promontory sticking up above the straights of Gibraltar off the Iberian Peninsula, marking the passage in between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has belonged to the Moors, the Spanish and the most recently the British and, because of its important strategic location, has seen more than its fair share of history and events.

Nowadays in calmer times it has become a popular tourist destination, with a large nature reserve, beautiful beaches, important historical artefacts, tunnels and a diverse and entertaining local population (and that’s just the monkeys). The ancient Greeks used to see Gibraltar as the edge of the known world. To sail beyond it would lead to death in the bottomless waterfall at the edge of the world, and for those who visit Gibraltar maybe they would like pretend this myth is true and stay on its sunny shores forever at the edge of the world. After all, if anyone tried to remove you from the rock then they would have a hard time, as after fourteen different sieges, Gibraltar is more than used to withstanding sustained attacks.
